We are proud to spotlight another amazing veteran in our community, Roberto Heredia. Roberto served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years from 1999 – 2010, spending 6 years active. He spent time in Virginia, California and Japan. During his service, he was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Roberto came home to Chicago in 2010, where he was seeking to find a community of other veterans during his transition back into civilian life. A group that could understand, empathize and support each other through that experience and the rest of their lives.
One day, scrolling through Facebook, he found Chicago Veterans.
Why Chicago Veterans
After checking out one of our events, Roberto realized this organization was exactly what he was looking for. An organization comprised of veterans and their supporters who help each other reconnect to the civilian world but also remember and reflect on their time in the service.
When asked what comes to mind when you think of ‘Chicago Veterans,’ this is what Roberto had to say…
“It’s a group of veterans regardless of branch, that get together to help build one another up and build Chicago… it’s the idea that when you build your fellow vet up, now you’ve got two vets who want to continue building other veterans up. By doing, this we create a unified front to address veteran-related issues, create networking opportunities, and really getting local veterans the support they need.”
Roberto went on talk about why he thinks this group is such a great fit for him, and naturally so supportive…
“I like helping my fellow person. There’s always something in a veteran that wants to help out and the best way to help to give up a bit of their time. That’s one of the most precious resources we have to give – It’s finite. “
While Roberto is a big supporter of all events put on by Chicago Veterans, he was most excited to talk about the Annual Chicago Veterans Ball coming up on November 3rd, 2018.
Annual Chicago Veterans Ball
With the event around the corner, we asked Roberto to tell us his favorite part of the Annual Chicago Veterans Ball.
“All in all it’s a really special night where people can put on their uniform or dress clothes, dance the night away, and dine with their fellow vets, spouses and supporters. From breaking bread together, to breaking out a dance move – it’s really good, simple, fun. “
Then he left us with a special message for anyone still on the fence about attending the Ball this year.
“I want to invite my fellow veterans to come enjoy yourselves, eat with us, have a drink (responsibly). Toast to the good times, to the bad times, the ones who are here, the ones who aren’t and everything in between. You might meet someone who served in the same area you did, same area of responsibility, or even who served in an entirely different generation. So come make memories with us, as that’s what veterans do. We make good times even better.”
Come meet Roberto Heredia, the rest of the Chicago Veterans members, and their supporters on November 3, 2018 for the 4th Annual Chicago Veterans Ball: a night full of honor and celebration.
We want to express our endless gratitude to Roberto Heredia for his decade of service, continued support, and willingness to share his story with us. Thank you!
