The Many Transitions Back to Civilian Life: The Role of Community.
For over a decade since launching Chicago Veterans, our mission has remained the same: “Empowering military veterans to take control of their transitions throughout life.” We intentionally use the word “transitions” because we recognize that returning to civilian life often unfolds in multiple chapters—whether it’s transitioning back to the workforce, returning to school, re-engaging with our communities, or reconnecting with family. We understand that veterans and their families experience many transitions throughout life.
Chicago Veterans is dedicated to building a sense of community and connecting veterans with essential resources while introducing them to new experiences and activities that cultivate belonging. These connections go beyond offering support; they are about helping veterans find their tribe—a vital part of building positive relationships after service and ensuring a smoother transition into civilian life.
The shift from military to civilian life is a profound challenge, and each veteran’s journey is unique. For some, it’s the loss of camaraderie; for others, it’s the loss of a career or sense of purpose. These difficulties can lead to isolation, which may drive veterans toward unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance abuse.
Recognizing this, Armando Vega, a U.S. Army combat veteran, launched the Veterans in Recovery Program under Chicago Veterans. After personally overcoming substance abuse and embracing a sober life, Armando was inspired to help his fellow veterans who are facing similar struggles. Veterans in Recovery is a recurring peer-to-peer support program focused on sobriety. It provides a space for veterans to come together, share their experiences, strengths, and hopes. The program is grounded in the belief that through mutual support, veterans can overcome common challenges and help each other on the path to sobriety.
This initiative is more than just a program; it’s a vital support system for veterans who need a community that understands and embraces their struggles, offering encouragement and support.
We invite everyone to join us at the next VetConnect: Veterans in Recovery Edition on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Prairie Trails Public Library. Come learn more about the program, explore local resources, and hear from fellow veterans as they share their experiences. Take the next step toward a positive, sober life. Together, we can build a future where every veteran has the support they need to thrive.
