Community-Based Care: Chicago Vet Center’s Commitment to Veterans
Located on 87th and Sacramento on the South Side of Chicago, the Chicago Vet Center recently opened its relocated facility to better support our Veterans, service members, and their families. Offering cost-free, confidential counseling services this community-based program is a testament to the commitment of its highly-trained counselors. The facility extends its services through partnerships with VSOs (Veteran Service Organizations) and other agencies, providing additional support to the community.
The Chicago Vet Center, one of the eight Chicagoland area locations to include the Indiana border, operates under the umbrella of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs – Readjustment Counseling Services. However, its unique focus on being community-based sets it apart. The center is dedicated to providing a range of counseling services, including individual, group, family, and couples counseling, all designed to support Veterans and service members navigating the challenges of life during and after military service.
The establishment of Vet Centers traces its roots back to the determination of Vietnam Veterans who, having faced the challenges of war, refused to be forgotten or stigmatized. These veterans sought care that addressed their unique needs, leading to the founding of Vet Centers. The legacy of compassion and understanding that began with these Veterans continues to guide the Chicago Vet Center’s mission, to welcome home and honor those who served, those still serving, and their families by reaching out to them, engaging their communities, and providing them with quality readjustment counseling and timely referral.
Eligibility for services at the Chicago Vet Center is broad and inclusive. Veterans and service members who served in various capacities including but not limited to combat operations, areas of hostility, stateside deployments, or experienced military sexual trauma are eligible. Eligibility varies based on individual military experience including those with service in the National Guard, Reserves, and Coast Guard, up to date eligibility can be viewed here. Importantly, the center also extends its services to the families of Veterans and service members, recognizing the crucial role they play in supporting the growth and goals of their loved ones.
Alfonso Lopez, serving as an Outreach Specialist at the Chicago Vet Center, emphasizes, “Some distinctive features of the Vet Centers is that you do not need to be enrolled in VA Healthcare or have a service-connected disability to benefit from our services. Also, our records are safe and confidential. Our records cannot be accessed by other Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) or Department of Defense (DoD) offices, military units, or other community networks and providers without your written consent or unless required to avert a life-threatening situation.”
Alfonso Lopez, a fellow Chicago Veteran and vital member of the Chicago Vet Center team was born and raised in Chicago’s Southwest Side Little Village neighborhood to Mexican Immigrant parents, Lopez enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in November 2000 and was Honorably Discharged in November 2004. His military experience includes two combat tours in Iraq, where he played a crucial role in the initial invasion in 2003 and conducted Convoy Security/Escort missions during his second tour.
In July 2021, Alfonso Lopez made history by becoming the first-ever Latino bilingual Spanish Outreach Specialist for the Chicago Vet Center. His journey from military service to his current role is a testament to the resilience and strength of those who have served. Lopez embodies the spirit of service not only through his military experience but also through his commitment to uplifting, motivating, and inspiring others.
In the words of Alfonso Lopez, “Let’s continue to uplift, motivate, and inspire each other; so that we can continue to uplift, motivate, and inspire others.” This powerful message encapsulates the essence of the Chicago Vet Center’s mission. It highlights the importance of fostering a sense of unity and support within the Veteran community and beyond.
The Chicago Vet Center stands as a crucial resource for Veterans, service members, and their families, providing a haven of support and understanding. With a commitment to inclusivity, confidentiality, and community-based care, the center exemplifies the enduring legacy of compassion established by Vietnam Veterans. Alfonso Lopez’s journey and his inspirational message reinforce the center’s mission, emphasizing the power of unity and shared experiences in overcoming challenges. As we reflect on the significance of the Chicago Vet Center, let us honor and support those who have served, recognizing the importance of mental health and well-being in their continued journey.
